#42 Chuck Muncie 1976-1980
When Hank Stram took over in 1976, one of his first priorities
was to revamp the offense around QB Archie Manning. The first
step was drafting runningback Chuck Muncie. Along with second
round pick, Tony Galbreath, the tandem was nicknamed "Thunder and
Lightning" and finally gave the Saints a respectable running
attack. In 1979, Muncie became the first Saint to rush for 1000
yards. That year he averaged 5.0 yards a carry and made the Pro
Bowl. He was named the Pro Bowl MVP in that game after scoring 2
TDs. Despite Chuck's talent and success, his career was marked
with discipline and drug problems.
He was traded to San Diego in 1980 where he played out the rest of his successful, yet
problematic career until 1984.
