Early Saints Heros - Danny Abramowicz and Archie Manning

Two fan favorites  of the early New Orleans Saints – one on his way out while the other was just beginning. Wide receiver Danny Abramowicz joined the Saints in 1967 as long-shot to make the team. He had been a 17th round (yes – he wasn’t chosen until round 17) pick and ended up being the Saints top receiver 5 of the 6 years he was there and even leading the NFL in catches for the 1969 season. He actually held the NFL record of 96 consecutive games with a catch for a time until it was broken by Harold Carmichael in 1980. Archie Manning was the Saints 1st-round pick in 1971 and for 11 seasons was considered the face of the New Orleans Saints franchise as he guided them almost constantly through some very rough times.

The two were together in 1971 – Manning’s rookie season – and in 1972. Abramowicz was dealt to San Francisco after the second game of the 1973 season. While Manning stayed with the club until 1982 when he was traded to Houston. Abramowicz would return to the organization as a Offensive Coordinator during the Ditka years.
